ATVs and Dirt Bikes – 100 Mile House RCMP advise that they have “received a number of reports from across the detachment area of persons driving ATV’s and off road dirt bikes on public roadways, creating safety concerns in the process. This has been an ongoing problem over the past years, particularly during summer months. With people from out of the area vacationing at summer properties, the temptation to ride off road vehicles down the public roads is significant. The police realize that it is much easier to ride down the public road rather than using a trailer to transport off road vehicles to the trail head. This being the case, the RCMP would like to remind recreational riders that although the Cariboo Regional District is a rural area, the Motor Vehicle Act applies to all publicly maintained roads within the District. The use of ATVs and dirt bikes without insurance on public roads is an offence under Section 24(3)(b) of the Motor Vehicle Act of British Columbia. Persons apprehended by police in breach of the law will be subjected to a $598.00 fine and vehicle towing charges if applicable. The public is requested to use off road trails only, to respect the rights of private land owners, and to wear property safety attire including a helmet
