Beautiful visitors.

(This was posted earlier, then disappeared, but it is worth a second look.)

In the late fall our lake was honoured by the visit of a couple of Trumpeter Swans as they were heading south for the winter.

Late visitors.

It must (almost) be winter.

It looked as though the lake was going to freeze over a few days early. It had a good start and then we had a windstorm and most of the first sheet of ice broke apart and ended up on along the shore on the Northside. As of December 9th it looked like it had finally frozen across, but still not quite cold enough. (wait for the update) Finally! As of today, December 21st, we can probably say the lake has frozen over. The last large open area now has a layer of very thin ice. A lot of snow has now fallen, making it very deceptive and very dangerous. A few of the bays froze over early in the month and people have been skating, but the main area of the centre of the lake will not support much weight. Enjoy the holiday season, but be very cautious.

OOPS! Tuesday, December 22nd – Another wind storm and the fresh ice broke up and there is now a large area of open water again.

Once again it looks like the Lake has frozen over. After a -20C night there only a few wet patches left so we are going to say December 23rd is the official freeze-over day. However, if you are going out on the ice, be very careful. It is hard to tell where the thin ice starts and it will not support much weight. Stay safe in all ways and enjoy the season.

Pretty rough skating!
